The Life Lesson I Learned from Jennifer Lawrence

I love the Oscars. The dresses. The interviews. The songs. The reactions. The heartfelt thank-yous.

I also wait for the blunders.

I learn some of my greatest lessons from blunders and Jennifer Lawrence taught me one of my biggest lessons. She taught me how to recover from anything.

In 2013 at the Oscar ceremony, some of you may remember Jennifer Lawrence was announced as the Best Actress winner for “Silver Linings Playbook”. As she walked to the stage, she gracefully hugged her co-star, continued to walk toward the stage, adjusted her gown and walked up one step then proceeded to trip on her gown and trip and fall on the second step.  (Watch it at 1:17 here

She got up on her own, continued to the standing microphone, saw the entire audience giving her a standing ovation, took a deep breath and said,  “Thank you. You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and it’s really embarrassing, but thank you.”  She then proceeded to accept the award.

What I learned in those few seconds is that it’s not that you fall, it’s how you recover that matters.

Here are the steps I live by to recover from those falls others witness:

Fall.
Pick yourself up.
Recover.
Continue.
Take a deep breath.
Acknowledge the fall and your feelings around it.
Don't apologize for it.
Move on.
And do all of it with grace and dignity.
