Let’s Talk About the Value of Values
I value words. I think they are important and because of this I am always looking up the meaning of them in the dictionary or looking for the right word to use in the thesaurus and here’s what I found about the word value: noun: value; plural noun: values
1. the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. "your support is of great value" synonyms:
worth, usefulness, advantage, benefit, gain, profit, good, help, merit, helpfulness, avail; More importance, significance "the value of adequate preparation cannot be understated"
2. a person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life."they internalize their parents' rules and values"
principles, ethics, moral code, morals, standards, code of behavior
Values serve as current compass of how we live our lives. They help us decide what direction to move into and I have found that by living by our values, it helps us sleep better when faced with ethical decisions.
Why Do Values Matter?
The main benefit I see of knowing your values is that you gain clarity and focus and are able to use your values to make consistent decisions and take committed actions. While we’re here on earth, living this one precious life, we have to realize our time is limited. That being said, if we value our lives, then it is smart to invest in them to be the best life possible, and we can do that by living a life that honors our values.
One that honors the things that are our principles and standards of behavior. That helps us prioritize how we live our lives, how we spend our time, right here, right now. Values act as our compass and put us on track every single day so we can stay on track to live our best lives. Now you must decide what ‘best’ means to you. And when you know that, your values keep you on course. Your values are those principles that tell you what direction to head into.
